Born in Thagaste to a pagan father and Christian mother (St Monica), Augustine spent years under the influence of Manichaeism before his conversion and baptism by St Ambrose of Milan in 387. Ordained priest and later Bishop of Hippo (391-430), he wrote prolifically, including ‘The City of God’ and ‘Confessions,’ combating the Donatist, Manichaean, and Pelagian heresies. He died in 430 during the Vandal siege of Hippo, and is regarded as the towering theological figure of North African Christianity.

But, after he had been made bishop, because of our sins it came to pass that Geiseric, in the ftfteenth year of his reign, seized Rome, the city until then most noble and renowned. Having been despoiled, they were to be driven away. In his merciful goodness the Lord graciously brought them to Naples, a town in Campania, after a safe passage.”
