A high imperial official (tribunus et notarius) under Emperor Honorius and a close friend of St Augustine, who dedicated the opening books of ‘The City of God’ to him. Sent to Africa in 411 to preside over the Council of Carthage resolving the Catholic-Donatist conflict, he ruled in favor of the Catholics. The Donatists then accused him and his brother Apringius of complicity with the usurper Heraclianus, and both were executed on 13 September 413 by Count Marinus, despite Augustine’s intervention on their behalf.

Archdeacon of Carthage who became Archbishop of Carthage in 388, holding jurisdiction over the metropolitans of Roman Africa. A close associate of St Augustine, he presided over the plenary councils of the African Church, worked to reconcile repentant Donatists, and was among the first to unmask and formally condemn Pelagianism, notably excommunicating Celestius in 412 and condemning Pelagius and Celestius together in 416.

Augustine of Hippo

Born in Thagaste to a pagan father and Christian mother (St Monica), Augustine spent years under the influence of Manichaeism before his conversion and baptism by St Ambrose of Milan in 387. Ordained priest and later Bishop of Hippo (391-430), he wrote prolifically, including ‘The City of God’ and ‘Confessions,’ combating the Donatist, Manichaean, and Pelagian heresies. He died in 430 during the Vandal siege of Hippo, and is regarded as the towering theological figure of North African Christianity.

Marcellinus was the imperial representative in North Africa at the time of the Donatist heresy. He and his brother, the judge Agrarius, tried to enforce the decisions of a conference in Carthage against Donatism, but the Donatists resorted to false accusation and the two brothers were martyred.
