Terence and thirty-nine companions suffered under Decius when the governor Fortunianus demanded sacrifice to pagan idols. After enduring severe tortures (burning irons, vinegar and salt on wounds, iron claws), the martyrs’ prayers caused a temple of Hercules to collapse. Zenon, Alexander, and Theodore were beheaded after further torture; Terence and the rest were later beheaded as well, after enduring imprisonment in chains and, according to tradition, being miraculously freed and fed by an angel overnight.
